last blog entries - suggestions

I understand you're busy with lots of projects and papers, but let me give you a number of suggestions if you feel like updating your blog. I promise to read your entries during the Christmas holiday!

-          What are your thoughts on the Stanford Prison Experiment? Have you ever been in a situation where group pressure and dynamics have made you or other people act against your beliefs?

-          Analyse drop off and pick up times at two different schools (preferably very different ones). Just by looking and listening,  what information can you obtain about the type of school it is, its values, the families of the children who attend (social class, etc.) Any obvious status symbols?

-          Analyse features of CES Don Bosco’s hidden curriculum. What values / attitudes / beliefs are being taught tacitly, through teacher behavior, customs and external symbols?

-          Watch one of the following films and analyse it using sociological concepts:
o   La clase (Entre les murs) (2008), http://www.imdb.es/title/tt1068646/
o   La ola (Die welle), (2008) http://www.imdb.es/title/tt1063669/maindetails

second post - your peer group

As announced in class, I'd like you to write about your peer group. Preferrably not your classmates at CES which can also be considered your workplace, but your more stable group o friends outside university.I'm interested in:

- the culture of your group: values, habits, norms (informal, obviously)

- mechanisms of social control. What happens when a member shows deviant attitudes / behavior? A typical case is when a member "steals" somebody elses's boyfriend / girlfriend...does the group react in any way? So think of as many examples as possible of how your peer group functions in order to survive and reproduce its culture and norms.

- status issues. Does anybody enjoy a higher status in your group? What/who decides? Are there any status symbols? What do you have to do as an individual in order to increase your status in this specific group?

- anything else you may find sociologically relevant.

Hope you enjoy writing this.

alien reports: how human beings educate their offspring (example of your first post)

During our trip to planet Earth, we made some interesting observations. One of them is that parents delegate instruction largely on schools - a weird institution that takes care of humans from early childhood until adulthood. Unlike homes, schools tend to be very big buildings which hosts dozens (sometimes hundreds) of young humans.

etc etc.

(hope you get the idea!)

this is not what it seems - intro

Hi everyone! This is the blog I've set up in order to follow your own blogs, give you an example of what I mean and publish suggestions for further writing.

If you're using Blogger, it may be a good idea for you to follow this blog, so you can be informed about any new entries I make. Another option for following me is using RSS feed, though I'm not too sure how that works. (Maybe someone from class can give us a hand).

Hope you enjoy all this.
